The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at the University of Tennessee is seeking an exceptionally qualified candidate with significant expertise in an area of aerospace engineering for the appointment to the position of Professor and holder of the UTSI Carolyn P. Boling Endowed Professorship. The successful candidate will be internationally recognized in aerospace propulsion and able to build and lead multi-participant research programs. The successful candidate will also be able to obtain major research sponsorship and recruit high-quality graduate students.
The UTSI Carolyn P. Boling Endowed Professor fosters, inspires, and contributes to the development of aerospace propulsion research efforts of MABE and the College of Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to substantially expand MABE research activities, be active in the graduate curricula development, and attract research funding and support for graduate students. Desired research focus areas include, but are not limited to: (1) sustainable aircraft and space propulsion systems, including pure electric, turboelectric and other hybrid propulsion systems; (2) hypersonic propulsion airframe integration; (3) rocket propulsion, including energetics and ballistics, and rocket boost for hypersonic propulsion systems, (4) high-temperature material science with application to gas turbines, hypersonic vehicles and rockets; (5) diagnostics of reacting flow environments for a wide range of propulsion applications, e.g. rocket, scramjet, gas turbine conditions and laboratory test conditions for the evaluation of these environments; and (6) ground testing of aerospace propulsion systems.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in aerospace engineering or a related field, a proven track record of developing research funding, and a substantial and active research program with archival publications. The successful candidate will be a full Professor. However, Associate Professor applicants at the point of promotion may also be considered. Prior experience in academia, government, and/or aerospace industry is preferred, but not required. Applicants with outstanding industrial research accomplishments are welcomed. Because a significant portion of the funds available for aerospace propulsion research is regulated under International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)/EAR, the successful candidate must be able to work in an environment conforming to ITAR requirements either currently or working to meet necessary requirements within these regulations. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to growing the UT Aerospace & Defense portfolio and be capable of engaging with government and industry in research areas beyond basic science, and will contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
