Assistant/Associate Professor in Plant Sciences
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Department of Plant Sciences seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor with teaching and research interests at the nexus of urban systems, environmental planning, horticulture and ecological landscape design. This individual will have the opportunity to collaborate with students and faculty across the Herbert College of Agriculture, the College of Architecture and Design, and the university at large towards the development of innovative undergraduate and graduate landscape design pedagogy. Candidates are expected to possess theoretical understanding and contemporary practical experience in the planning, design, implementation and management of high-performance landscape strategies and sustainable horticulture tactics. These include but are not limited to green infrastructure, environmental remediation, ecological resilience, and urban ecology.
Responsibilities
This individual will fill a 9-month tenure-track position with a 100% appointment in the Herbert College of Agriculture. Primary responsibilities will be to teach courses in the undergraduate Sustainable Landscape Design concentration in the Department of Plant Sciences. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to continue building synergy with the School of Landscape Architecture through coursework and graduate student engagement. The ability to contribute to curricular areas of ecological landscape design and management, contemporary construction methods and materials, digital design and fabrication workflows, and representation is strongly desired.
In addition to developing a contemporary teaching program, they will be expected to participate in student academic advising, maintain a record of service to the institution and their discipline, and develop a program of outreach and creative/scholarly activity supported by extramural funding that complements in-classroom instruction and broader curricular and research objectives of UT Knoxville landscape programs. The successful candidate will also be able to participate actively in our culture of community-engaged scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experiential learning.
About the Concentration:
The Sustainable Landscape Design Concentration at UT Knoxville seeks to prepare students for a range of career paths through which they can design, implement, manage and advocate for high-performance, sustainable landscapes. We envision three focus areas for students in this new program: Entrepreneurship for students who envision having their own businesses, Ecological Landscape Design and Management for students who envision roles in design consultancies, non-profits or public entities, and Pre-Professional for students who wish to take advantage of our accelerated 4 2 advising pathway to the Master of Landscape Architecture degree available through the UT School of Landscape Architecture.
Augmenting its tradition of aesthetically-driven, residential garden design, this concentration now emphasizes gaining knowledge and practical experience in site-scale strategies and tactics for landscapes designed to manage stormwater, enhance public health, regenerate and remediate degraded sites, and promote healthy urban ecosystems while creatively shaping the aesthetics of the public realm.
Salary:
Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.
Qualifications
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates must hold the terminal degree in their primary field of expertise.
Preferred qualifications include an accredited professional graduate degree in landscape architecture or an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture and a terminal degree in an allied field, and prior professional experience in the green industry or related fields
