Operators and Technicians
The Navy's Nuclear Field (NF) program offers extensive training as nuclear propulsion plant operators and technicians to young men and women with aptitude in mathematics and science. The standards for selection for enlistment in the Navy's NF program are high. People applying for NF training must be dedicated to pursuing the challenge this highly technical field offers. Applicants should be mature, responsible, and capable of working well under pressure.
Machinist's Mates Submarines Auxiliary receive extensive training in the operation and maintenance of hydraulic power plants, hoists and cylinders, oxygen generators, atmosphere control equipment, refrigeration systems, emergency diesel engines, pressurized air systems, and plumbing submarine systems. Auxiliary systems specialists operate and maintain submarine non-nuclear mechanical systems. Responsible for the operation, routine care, and repair of submarine auxiliary systems as well as fire-fighting and damage control equipment. These mechanical specialists are a vital element in the day-to-day operation and combat survivability of the submarine.
Manufacturing and storing oxygen; Removing airborne waste products such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons; Cleaning, adjusting, testing and performing preventive maintenance on submarine emergency diesel engines, mast and antenna hoists, hatches and Watertight doors; Repairing or replacing valves, filters, pumps, compressors and hydraulic or pneumatic control devices; Operating, troubleshooting and repairing submarine refrigeration systems using specialized equipment after receiving EPA certification operating and maintaining; Desalinization plants (distilling plants) to make fresh water from sea water; Maintaining air conditioning systems and galley equipment; Repairing or replacing valves, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, steam turbines and hydraulic or pneumatic control devices; Making entries in and analyzing machinery operating records and reports.
Machinist's Mates, Nuclear Power (MMN) operate and maintain Naval Nuclear propulsion plants and associated equipment; supervise and administer naval nuclear propulsion plant operations; thoroughly understand reactor, electrical, and mechanical theory involved in the operation of the nuclear reactor, steam plant, propulsion plant, and auxiliary equipment; operate and repair systems associated with reactor plants, propulsion plants, and auxiliary support systems (e.g. air compressors, distilling plants, propulsion turbines, electric power generation turbines, shaft line components, air conditioning equipment, feed and condensate, steam, hydraulic, seawater systems, air, potable water, lubricating oil and oil purification, reactor auxiliary and support systems pumps, valves, and heat exchangers); perform tests, transfers, and inventories of lubricating oils, fuels, and water; and maintain records and reports on both surface and sub-surface ships.
