Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor or Professor of Practice in Energy Sustainability Policy
The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time, in-residence, non-tenure line Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor or Professor of Practice position (rank determined based on background and qualifications under AC21) in Energy and Sustainability Policy for the 2024-25 academic year. This is a 12-month appointment funded for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2024.
The Energy and Sustainability Policy major is currently offered exclusively through World Campus and serves an audience primarily of adult learners. One of the first and only programs of its kind in the world, ESP attracts both returning adult learners already working in related career paths and traditional undergraduates embarking on higher education for the first time. The program currently has over 100 active majors from around the world. It is the only fully online bachelor's degree in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and students can choose to pursue a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science. This major prepares students for a variety of careers at the intersection of science and policy as it relates to transitioning to a low-carbon economy and implementing more sustainable practices across societal sectors. Our curriculum focuses on both an in-depth exploration of traditional and alternative energy solutions as well as human dimensions of sustainability challenges and the policy tools to bring it all together. ESP places a high value on real-world energy industry knowledge in addition to fundamentals in sustainability, human-environment interactions, and policy analysis.
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to teach up to six courses per year. While most of the teaching is likely to be at the undergraduate level in the Energy and Sustainability Policy program, the opportunity may exist to utilize the successful candidate's expertise in other programs of study in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering. Topics of these courses may include energy and climate policy, energy and sustainability applications of GIS, water and energy, sustainable development, and the capstone course for the program. Primary teaching responsibilities will be online, with courses offered through Penn State's World Campus with some opportunity to teach in residence at the University Park campus. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will provide academic and career advising to approximately half of the students enrolled in the Energy and Sustainability Policy major. This includes evaluating transfer courses, facilitating course selections each semester, and supporting the students as they navigate major and minor decisions and career goals. Additional responsibilities may include moving in-person courses online, updating course materials or developing new course materials, assisting with curriculum design and assessment, and daily management of the program. The teaching load will be adjusted to reflect additional advising and service commitments.
Requirements and Qualifications
A Ph.D. in a related field or a Master's Degree in a related field with complementary industry experience is required. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and background in energy and sustainability or climate-focused policy through research, teaching, or applied experiences. Applied experience and evidence of commitment to high-quality teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate level are a plus.
