Job Description

The Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Engineering Technology, beginning Fall 2024.

We seek candidates with a strong background and interest in the broad domain of engineering technologies with emphasis on advanced manufacturing systems and related emerging research priority areas that address challenges and leverage opportunities outlined in the ODU's strategic plan “Forward-Focused: Where Innovation Meets Possibilities” and the BCET's strategic plan “Focus on the Future”. Examples include research focused on the development of technologies and their applications in additive manufacturing (3D printing), smart manufacturing (IoT and automation), digital twins, industrial robotics, advanced materials, biomanufacturing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program, and opportunities for teaching graduate courses in the candidate's area of expertise will also be available through graduate faculty appointments with other departments in the college, The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong interdisciplinary and externally funded research program in one or more of the research focus areas outlined above and develop active collaboration with faculty and researchers in the college and across campus. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty affiliated with the newly established Institute for Autonomous and Connected Systems and the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health, and Human Performance in the college.

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology program has been recently established in the college with expected growth in enrollment through various pipelines with community colleges and partnerships with the manufacturing industry in the Commonwealth and beyond. The successful candidate is expected to teach and develop undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in one or more of the following areas: embedded systems technology, computer engineering technology, networking system design, instrumentation systems design, or related courses. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to provide guidance for senior design capstone projects within their area of expertise, engage in various service activities, and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) among students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities
  1. Relevant experience and expertise in one or more of the research areas outlined above, demonstrated by a record of peer-reviewed journal publications and success in securing sponsored research from various funding agencies and organizations.
  2. The ability to teach core undergraduate courses.
  3. A demonstrated commitment to student success, recruitment, and retention.
Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a closely related field by May 2024.

Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification

Preferred Qualifications
  • A demonstrated record in external research funding, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry and government partnerships.
  • Experience in applying cutting-edge engineering concepts, techniques, and tools to more than one of the high-priority research areas outlined above.
  • A successful record of teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in a discipline closely related to engineering technology.
