Job Summary/Basic Function
The Department of Computer Science at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a postdoctoral research assistant position. This is a one-year temporary appointment with a possible annual renewal for up to four years, depending on the selected candidate's continued interest and performance. The position is contingent upon funding and may begin as early as July 1, 2023.
We seek applicants interested in contributing to developing an online database platform for analyzing botanical compounds with mass spectrometry and developing professional skills for future positions in academia or non-academic settings. Successful candidates should have a desire to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cross-departmental team of professional staff, students, faculty, and administrators.
The project's mission is to collect data for secondary metabolites from botanical materials, which will be used to develop an online database. The database will facilitate the authentication of known plant materials by chemical identification and provide critical references to botanical dietary supplement research. Duties include but are not limited to designing and conducting research within a collaborative setting; organizing and consolidating data into a SQL database; analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative chemical data; disseminating research findings at conferences and in referred journals; and developing partnerships with educators, organizations, and researchers to further the project's mission.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
A doctoral degree in computer science, chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field is required.
Other Desirables
Applicants with strong statistical, computational, and analytical skills as well as strong oral and written communication skills, will receive special consideration.

- Experience in working with mass spectrometry and chromatographic separation.
- Experience in collecting and analyzing large analytical datasets and data mining approaches.
- Experience in analyzing secondary metabolites in food materials.
- Publishing in reputable, peer-reviewed journals documenting the experiences listed above.
