Typical Starting Salary: $44,124.08-$46,797.61
Summary: This position performs building inspections in the enforcement of local, state, and federal building codes.
Required Hours of Availability: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; Monday through Friday
Examples of Duties Performed:
• Performs detailed and technical inspections for buildings under construction or renovation; inspects structural, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC components.
• Notates and files records of violations; performs re-inspections to ensure corrections are made.
• Provides information to the public regarding the nature, requirements, and purposes of existing building codes.
• Performs detailed plan reviews for proposed building projects and denotes changes or variations in order to meet current codes and regulations.
• Researches and shares pertinent information regarding code changes and interpretations with other departmental employees and supervisors.
• Greets visitors and answers telephone; provides information and assistance.
• Verifies addresses of potential construction in special flood hazard areas.
• Communicates with contractors, building owners, builders, engineers, architects.
• Attends continuing education seminars.
• Inspects burned or damaged houses to determine the feasibility of repair.
• Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Summary of Qualifications:
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Ability to evaluate and assess the total worksite and to perform assigned duties in a safe, efficient, non-disruptive and non-intrusive manner.
• Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama.
• Possession of or ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) certification in one or more inspection areas.
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively.
• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to inspect buildings and related facilities.
• Sufficient manual dexterity with our without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a personal computer and related equipment.
• Sufficient personal mobility, strength, balance and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform duties on a variety of inspection sites under physically demanding and hazardous conditions throughout the county.
