The Application Developer Lead is a leadership position within Application Solutions. Duties require significant interaction with internal University customers and external vendors, independent judgment, and sound decision making. This position receives general direction from management and operates at a maximum level of independence.
Assigns personnel to projects and/or tasks, directs activities, and evaluates performance for quality and timeliness. Reviews and evaluates work and provides management with input into staff performance evaluations. Responsible for assisting management with professional development of staff. Responsible for instructing, directing, mentoring, and training staff. Confers with and advises on policy and procedure, internal business processes, priorities, and problems. This position does not involve direct supervisory responsibility (hire/fire).
Responsible for application support, requirements and systems analysis, application programming, software testing, and project management for projects to which assigned. Possesses comprehensive knowledge, expertise, and works independently as an expert through each of the phases of the software development lifecycle. Responsible for project plans, budgets, time, cost estimates, design specifications, and/or other documentation associated with projects, tasks, or applications to which they are assigned. Consults and collaborates with personnel in other technical departments to coordinate activities. Possesses knowledge of and is proficient to serve in role of project manager with general direction. Possesses comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated expertise with regard to relevant2 software development tools. Prepares activity and status reports regarding the activities to which they are assigned.
Job Responsibilities
- Leadership & Supervision. Assigns personnel to various projects and support activities and directs activities. Reviews and evaluates individual performance. Participates in staff performance evaluations.
- Application Support. Responds to customer reports of problems, system performance anomalies, and /or general inquiries. Includes application code troubleshooting and design, programming, testing, and debugging of software patches/fixes.
- Requirements/Systems Analysis. Formulates and defines systems scope and objectives through research and fact-finding. Includes analysis and documentation of business processes and functional requirements. Considers the business implications of the application of technology to the business environment. Translates functional requirements and prepares detailed program specifications from which programs will be written.
- Application Programming. Responsible for program design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.
- Project Management. Responsible for identifying appropriate resources needed, developing project plan/schedule, scheduling and facilitating project meetings, coordinating activities of project team, and reporting project status to both management and customer.
- Participates in meetings and communicates regularly with both management and customer regarding project and/or application support activity status.
- May provide version control and configuration control for software supported by the team.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Experience with Ellucian product line including Banner SIS, DegreeWorks, etc.
- Experience with Java, Groovy/Grails, Oracle, and PL/SQL.
- Experience with Git, Jenkins, and other Higher Education third party solutions such as Slate, Axiom, JAMS are desirable.
- Experience with DevOps practices preferred.
- Ability to thrive in a complex business environment where technical requirements are continuously evolving and where technical and business solutions are continuously being refined.
- Strong analytical and strong problem-solving skills - communicates clearly and effectively to evaluate information/data to make decisions; anticipates obstacles and develop plans to resolve.
