Colby seeks applicants for operators at the central steam plant to fill shifts as necessary on a temporary on call basis. Position requires ability to operate high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The steam plant operator reports to the engineer in charge of the central steam plant and interacts with other members of Facilities Services.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform the essential functions.
General indoor and outdoor physical plant and campus environment. Position involves frequent movement. Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to climb or crawl into small spaces, including manholes, steam pits, mechanical rooms, and other spaces as required to perform the requirements of the position. Computer and tool usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful and satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) and a pre-employment health screening. All students, faculty, and staff who are present on campus must be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, unless granted an exemption or accommodation by the College.

- Operate boilers, maintain operational logs, and other duties as necessary
- Complete all work in a prompt, neat, safe, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
- Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a neat and clean condition
- Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operators license required
- Skill to operate and maintain natural gas, wood fired, and propane/air burners and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment
- Mechanical ability to operate, maintain, and service the mechanical equipment and systems used in high-pressure steam plants
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
- Basic computer skills such as email, Word, and Excel
