About the Opportunity:

Brown University is undergoing a tremendous growth in the arts, with newly appointed leadership for the Brown Arts Institute, and the state of the art, one of a kind Lindemann Performing Arts Center scheduled to open in Fall 2023. Responsibilities:

The Assistant Technical Director reports to the Director of Design and Production and assists with all technical components of productions and programs taking place in BAI venues, including the Lindemann Performing Arts Center and the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. This position will be responsible for operating the automation control systems, overseeing and certifying all rigging activities and offering other technical support and guidance. The Assistant Technical Director ensures that all rigging activities are inspected and certified for safe use before any theatrical activities can take place. The Assistant Technical Director will also have technical oversight of the events, programs, and performances scheduled in spaces outside the Lindemann Main Hall.

The Assistant Technical Director should be experienced with all aspects of technical production, and have prior working experience with theatrical rigging including the use of chain motors, and automation systems. Experience in Theater, Music, Dance, Opera and Visual Arts is essential, as is an open, creative approach. The Assistant Technical Director, in addition to working with artists, will work closely with producers, curators, creative team, BAI department heads, faculty, students, and technicians to oversee the technical production process.

Qualifications:

Education
  • Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred: BA or BFA in technical theater or related field
Experience
  • 2+ years in rigging and automation work
  • 2 years of supervisory experience
  • ETCP Certified Rigger. Certification may be obtained during the first year of employment.
Job Competencies
  • Broad skill-set including scenic fabrication, rigging, automation, computer networks.
  • Demonstrated competencies in professional artistic practice to appropriately communicate with a wide array of creative professionals (including faculty, visiting artists, etc.)
  • Good organizational skills
